Texas Parks and Wildlife puts the colony in Bracken Cave at more than 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats. It is a maternity site: females gather there each year to give birth and raise their young, and the bats roost there from March to October. Bat Conservation International owns the cave and nearly 1,500 acres around it to protect the colony.

What the wording keeps

  • summer home (March to October)
  • more than 15 million is Texas Parks and Wildlife's figure; Wikipedia, citing a 1988 print article, gives 20 million

Changed on 4 November 2026: the colony's size now comes from Texas Parks and Wildlife (more than 15 million) instead of a 1988 estimate of 20 million; the purchase year was dropped because two sources disagree.
