The first compact disc made in the United States for commercial release was Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A.
Columbia's CDs had been manufactured in Japan. In September 1984 a newly opened CBS and Sony plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, pressed Born in the U.S.A., making it the first CD manufactured in the US for commercial release. Classic Rock Review noted that the disc was "actually born in the USA".
